YUCK! I picked this up for 60 cents at the local thrift store because I had never read anything by Nora Roberts before... Let me assure you, I will never read anything else by her either. This was such a terrible book. Correction, two books, because there are two equally terrible stories in it. All about wiccans or witches or whatever you want to call them and a shapeshifter in the second story who turns himself into a wolf and then watches the heroine undress. There was a really creepy scene wh YUCK! I picked this up for 60 cents at the local thrift store because I had never read anything by Nora Roberts before... Charmed is Ana (Anastasia) Donovan's story. The youngest Donovan is an empath. Her gift is the ability to heal. She is able to determine the extent of the damage to a person by the laying on of hands and cure them from within using her gift. However, there is a toll to be paid. The healer must take the persons pain upon herself. This can be draining or even deadly, depending on the timing and the seriousness of the patient's ills. Because of her empathy, her feelings are extremely sensitive. Her Charmed is Ana (Anastasia) Donovan's story. The youngest Donovan is an empath. Her gift is the ability to heal. She had once revealed herself to a man she had loved and been cruelly rejected. She has accepted that she will probably lead a solitary existence, but delights in the newfound happiness of her two cousins. That is until the house next door becomes occupied.

Boone Sawyer, fantasy writer and single father, has already lost the love of his life. He has moved to California to remove himself and his young daughter from the sad memories and the interference of her grandparents. He is determined to start over, but love is not to be part of the equation. He's very well off and has had experience of gold diggers trying to attract him by cozening up to his daughter. Naturally he is suspicious of Ana' friendship with the little girl. When she realizes who his is and tells him of her admiration of his work, he is extremely rude to her. Determined to put him in his place she shows him her collection of his work, along with that of her aunt, Bryna (Morgana's mother) who also writes fantasy novels.

Realizing that Ana isn't the kind of woman he suspected, he let's her into their lives. It isn't long before he realizes that he wants her to be a permanent part of their family. Once burned, twice shy, Ana is too afraid to tell him what she is, and too polite to read Boone's thoughts to determine his feelings for her. She puts off telling him until tragedy forces her to reveal her skills. The toll on Ana is great. Now Boone doesn't know what to do with his feelings. Which will prevail, gratitude for her aid, fear for her life, or anger that she didn't trust him enough to share her secret with him? Can he accept who she is and make her a part of his life or is it all too much to take? Can Ana bear another rejection? This third Donovan story ties up all the loose ends and gives a glimpse of the amusing elder Donovan's in the process. I think the reader will enjoy this believable and highly lovable witch tale.

Enchanted is Liam Donovan's story. Unlike the others in the DONOVAN LEGACY, this one did not enchant me. It featured a self-centered hero, a gullible heroine, and a decided lack of plot. The premise was fine but it went nowhere in a big hurry. This Donovan is a second cousin to Morgana (Captivated), Sebastian (Entranced) , and Anastasia (Charmed). He has isolated himself in the mountains in order to make a grave decision. He's been requested to take on the mantle of Prince of his people, by his father the current Prince. On the wind comes a message.....Love is coming to Liam, but he wants no part of love and is determined to make this decision without its influence. In fact, he shrewdly decides to use his knowledge of the coming love prospect as the excuse for his final decision.

A prince must choose another hereditary witch as his mate. Should the prospective young woman not be, he could marry her and use her as his excuse to decline the offer. Should she prove to be a witch he could refuse her, sighting a lack of feeling as his reason to refuse. This should give you a pretty good insight into his character already.

The heroine, Rowan, is at a crossroad in her life. Everything in her life has been chosen for her, her career as well as her blasï¿½ fiancï¿½. She is dissatisfied and convinced that something is missing in her life. She retreats to the mountains to come to a decision as to the direction her life should now take. There she meets Liam.

Liam's gift, among others, is the ability to change form. Taking the shape of his favorite form, a wolf, he scopes out his new neighbor, Rowan. Ever astute he draws the conclusion that she is his prophesied love interest. Rowan is quite taken with the wolf, but not with her enigmatic neighbor, at least at first. Liam attempts to avoid her in his human form while watching over her and learning about her as the wolf. He crosses the bounds of decency however, taking advantage of opportunities to share her bed and watch her bathe. He quickly realizes something that Rowan herself does not know. She too is a hereditary witch. Rowan is unaware of her gift because her mother had married a mortal and chosen not to accept her nature. Rowan's maternal grandmother whom she is named after, was explained away as being merely an eccentric old woman.

In spite of himself, Liam finds himself wanting to be near Rowan in human form as well and eventually feels compelled to reveal her true nature to her. He decides that the best way to convince her is to reveal his own. Justifiably appalled by Liam's deceit and the way he has taken advantage of her loving nature, she flees back to her home. She is determined to make the life of her choosing without him, until his mother appears and tells her he is miserable. Unfortunately Liam's nature does not really improve after she gives him a second chance.

I don't think the characters ever really connected for me. I wasn't sure they belonged together, nor that I liked them enough to care. I enjoy romances with subplots or intrigue. I like to see the pair working together to a common goal, or against a common foe. Even if they are working at cross-purposes, I like that little niggling in the back of their minds that says, I love this person, why am I doing this?

Charmed was magical and I enjoyed reading it, but Enchanted....
The girl was enchanted by a wolf, that's right, a wolf. Not a guy, but a wolf.
Not only does she let the wolf, a wild animal mind you, in her cabin, she takes a bath in front of it. Yes, she's naked in front of the wolf. And she seems to find nothing wrong with that. WE know the wolf is really the guy, but SHE doesn't know that.
What a creeper.
You have got to be pretty desperate to want the attention of a wolf.
I was completely freaked Charmed was magical and I enjoyed reading it, but Enchanted....

Also, the actual romance in her books is very lacking and unfulfilling, and I'm talking about every single one of her books that I've read. If you're going to call yourself a romance author I think that the first thing for you to do is to tell yourself that you actually have to write out the sex scenes. Meaning, sentences like "flying off a cliff and soaring through the air together" just don't suffice. I swear, the first time I read this I was like what the heck is happening? There were absolutely no details accompanying these cryptic and vague remarks, so I really had no idea what was happening. Her books could barely be classified as romance novels. It's almost more of what you'd find in a teen book. There are the barest hint of what's going on, and the rest if just feelings and sensations. I can tell you, things like "we both went jumping off the cliff together and went soaring" are not enough for me in a romance book.

Once upon a time I loved Nora Roberts. I have read most of her 160+ books. THIS 2-book combo is one of the worst examples of her writing. Overwrought, full of cliches, bunch of nonsense (which isn't a crime in itself admitedly, especially in romance novels, but this takes the cake!) The 1st book is slightly better but the 2nd one reads like it was written by a 16 year-old. Yech. For MUCH BETTER Nora Roberts writing, try the Chesapeake Bay series. That's it. I'm done with Nora Roberts. She has a cookie-cutter and she tells the same tale ... again and again and again. It works for her, I know. She's obviously making money hand-over-fist. But, I just can't read the same story again. Ever. Holy cow, even the ebbs and flows of her stories are the same. But, after 160 or so titles published, I s'pose they would all start to feel alike. Well, more power to her. This is, after all, America. Lucky thing for Ms. Roberts. That's it. I'm done with Nora Roberts. I've read a lot of Nora Roberts over the years. I think she was the author of my first romance novel. You know what you get when you read a Nora Roberts book; no real surprises, same destination it's just the journey that varies. That can be said for this double edition of the Donovan Saga. This is really more of a guilty pleasure than any kind of "advanced reading". I read so much that romances really just fill the time and are entertaining. This book was just that: entertainment.

"Charmed" is

"Charmed" is the story of Ana and Boone. Ana Donovan comes from a long lineage of very powerful witches. Yeah, that's right. She's a witch. She and all of her cousins (see other Donovan novels) practice witchcraft in varying ways. Ana is an empath. She is sensitive to other's feelings, their aches and pains, and can link psychically to their minds. She works as an herbalist making lotions and potions for her cousin's shop, Wicca, and specialized treatments for her clients. She lives alone and has resigned herself to helping others without getting close or letting them know her true self. This changes when her new neighbors move in next door. Boone Sawyer, father of spunky 6 year old Jessie, has moved to escape the pressures of his extended family and give him and his daughter a fresh start. After Boone's wife passed away four years ago, pressures to find "a mother for his child" were becoming increasingly stressful after constant badgering from his mother and mother-in-law. Boone falls for the lovely lady next door, who picks flowers in the moonlight, takes long walks on the beach and is enamored with his daughter. Yet, Ana is reluctant to give over her heart and afraid to reveal her true heritage having been burned before. Boone, a moderately successful children's book author, seems to have walked right into his own fairytale and found that the witch isn't so wicked.

Seeing as I've read so many of Robert's books, this one tilted me the wrong way. It's no surprise at the end that the main characters are going to be together. That's kind of the mandate of romance novels. What I take issue with is the common belief of these types of novels that all women want is to get married and have kids. I'm not sure when this particular female fantasy died for me, I just know that it did. And I tire of reading the epilogues of these kinds of books where they end up married and have like 10 children. I get it. It's one of those things that is to be assumed all women want. Maybe, in life. But reading allows a type of fantasy free from "normal" life. Especially in a novel about witches. Let's be honest. Are you reading a Nora Robert's novel for the happily ever after ending? No. You aren't. You're reading it for the crazy love-fest that's going to be happening once the main characters stop fighting and realize how bad they want each other. So why the tagged on ending where everyone is married and pregnant? I'm so tired of reading this ending that it makes me roll my eyes and gag with all the sappy sweetness. Maybe I should stop reading the epilogues. Clearly I'm over them.

Another issue with Robert's work is the archetypal female lead who is controlled by her main man. Often during a fight, the woman gets lifted up and tossed over the man's shoulder as he drags her away to a place where she will be forced to listen to him. While the woman doesn't always take this graciously, I think this is one of the most offensive things a man can do to them. Picking someone up and carrying them away by force is degrading, praying on the "weak-willed" female who needs a man to set her straight. Sorry, but if someone lifted me up and whisked me away so that I would stop screaming at them, they are likely to get a booted kick right to the man parts. As wonderfully romantic as it seems to be "swept off your feet", this is directly the opposite - being controlled by man used to getting his way.

As long as we are complaining, why is every female lead a virgin? Ok, I get it. Ana was burned by her former boyfriend who spurned her after she told him she was a witch. They didn't make it to the fun part. Is it fear of labeling a woman as a slut because she's slept with someone else and not the very handsome stranger that happens to appear and romance her? Boone slept with other women. Several, actually! He admits to having lots of "female companions" after his wife died. So, that's ok then? But Ana having one boyfriend isn't? Let's ditch this sorry-story and get real. Why label every female as "virgin"? Just once I'd like to read a story about a woman who isn't innocent as white fallen snow to her rough-and-tumble male counterpart. That's all I'm asking.

If you've put up this far with my ranting, you'd probably assume that I didn't like this novel. On the contrary! Aside from the niggling issues of most romance novels, this story was pretty enjoyable. Ana's magical practices are nifty and homegrown. She's an avid gardener and the whole "naturalist" witch appealed to me. Making poultices, potions, lotions, seemed like a reasonable way to make a living, especially in our organic-crazed world. And unlike some novels (ahem, "Among Others" by Jo Walton), Ana actually did magic. Lots of it too. Not just weaving spells and crafting thunderstorms, but healing and comforting magic. As with most of Robert's "saga" novels, the whole family comes together once or twice and jumbles the story into a mash of names and inside references. Robert's mostly does a good job of keeping everyone straight and giving a first time reader a background story if they missed the first, or even second, installment. I felt a little lost when the extended family showed up, but Robert's clearly knows her stuff and didn't make it about them. This was Ana's story in the Donovan history books. In all, "Charmed" was an enjoyable read. It also spurred some research on the productive Mrs. Roberts, and I realized that, though Goodreads doesn't reflect it, I've read a boat-load of her books. Next up ...

"Enchanted"

It took me a long time to get through this book and I'm not sure why. Time and lack of interest I suppose. Rowan Murray is tired of having her life planned for her by her well-meaning but safe parents, and her well-meaning but boring boyfriend. In desperation to escape, she flees to a friend's cottage in Oregon to find herself again and get some space. There she can relax, spend her days enjoying herself and renew long-buried passions like drawing while in the wilderness. Rowan finds comfort in a wandering lone wolf who appears skulking in the woods around her cottage. She doesn't fear him and even lets him in during lonely nights for company. Then there is her neighbor on the other side of the forest, Liam Donovan. Difficult, stubborn and unfriendly, Liam just wants to be left alone for the most part. Nursing his own life-changing decision, Liam has left his family to make up his mind about his heritage and accepting his birthright. He didn't want to get involved with Rowan, but seeing as she is around and willing, he might make an exception about sleeping with her. It's not until her own heritage becomes apparent that Liam may have fallen in love with the perfect girl.

To be honest, "Enchanted" was a bit hokey. Whereas "Charmed" was cute and vaguely Wiccan, "Enchanted" is just bordering on silly. White robes and glass orbs, glowing white lights and shape-shifting spirit animals, it sort of read something like one of those knick-knack stores that sells incense and wizard figurines. The magic was unimpressive and the psychic "mind-sex" felt sort of wrong, not thrilling. Liam has so many talents in magic that it was almost irritating how many things he could just DO without trying. His attitude fell short of being attractive either, and I found myself wondering why Rowan even liked the guy.

Rowan's character was fine, if a little predictable. I know we aren't inventing the wheel here, but her only character flaw is liking a jerk. While Liam was encouraging of her talents, he was also using her most of the book to his own ends. The best part of the book is when Rowan tells him off and stands up for herself. Mostly she spends her time eating cookies for breakfast and taking long trips into the woods.

I was glad to be finished this one. Don't go looking for anything special. Some of the sex scenes are intense, but otherwise, there are better Harlequins than this one.

Rating: MA: even more so in the 4th book: it was over the top sensual, graphic, and leaned toward porn. In both books, these guys were rough and several scenes bordered on… I hate to say rape as they were somewhat consensual… however, they were excessively aggressive sex. This might be a trigger warning for those sensitive to aggression.

Book 3: Charmed: Anastasia Donovan meets Boone Sawyer and his daughter Jessie. Gentle spirit meets a suspicious father. Can he accept what is right in front of him or will he run to the hills when faced with his worst nightmare? The Donovan parents arrived and were a hoot. I loved every single one of them. Ana's father was a scream. Not literally, but he was funny until Boone crossed a line. Boone soon discovered that Mr. Donovan could be a bit frightening. [5-stars]

Book 4: Enchanted: Rowan Murry encounters Liam Donovan in the woods while taking a sabbatical from teaching. I had expected so much from this story and I did not enjoy this guy at all. I have read this story at least three times now and it has not improved my opinion of him one bit. On the one hand, he was an entitled-spoiled-brat-man-child on a sulk as HE decided what he wanted to do about his legacy. On the other hand, he was the heir-apparent to the Donovan Legacy clan with all the responsibilities that entailed. He spent nearly the whole book brooding, sulking, and bemoaning whether he wanted to take the mantle from his father. His parents [Oh, I just loved them] bore it with all the dignity of a King and Queen watching their putz of a Prince sulk around and grouse about his duties. [4-stars]

I had read this yrs ago, and reread it. There is a shape shifter in it. He becomes a wolf. Those who have read other paranormal did not see anything awful about the wolf. My dogs come into my bath often. Not The bath, but bathroom. They bump their heads on the door if I disappear, so since she only saw a wolf no biggie. She writes paranormal, murder, romance etc. I would look up her book before reading. I gave it 3.5 rounded to a four. It was a good paranormal.

Two books in one...what a deal. I read these two books on vacation and they were perfect for this reason...a little fantasy, a little romance, and some interesting twists.

until Boone Sawyer moved next door, with his charming 6 year old daughter Jesse. Boone loved his wife, she died of cancer when jesse was 2 - and he loves Jesse. he writes and illustrates fairy tales, and encourages Jesse' imagination. And jesse quickly wins over Ana, and Boone more slowly... their relationship grows - always the underlying denied passion, but they share time together, and their bodies, and then their hearts... a bit of a rough spot when Jesse heals a severly hurt jesse when she fell off a ladder, and Boone insists on knowing how... and she tells him... and he withdraws, and she is hurt, and she goes to Ireland, and returns for Christmas and puts her house up for sale... and he is pissed, and he stakes his claim - with wonderfully loving words. ahhhh

Enchanted:
setting: the forest of Oregan, near the coast. Two cabins, one of wood one of stone. Winter is coming to an end, spring is around the corner.

Imagery: as the woods and gardens begin to bloom, so does Rowan, especially...

Characters:
Rowan - a witch that did not know she was a witch (her grandmother abjured her magic for love, and her children, her children's children, and her children's children's children thought of her as eccentric). Professor/educated/reserved parents, who love her but think she can only be happy if she is like them. She got her masters, taught for 7 years - and they are planning for her doctorate and her marriage... and she's tired of going along, and decides to leave - to retreat at her friend's mountain cabin for 3 months and figure things out. She is on an introverted search to find herself.

Liam Donovan - a witch that fully knows his own powers. He often explores as a black wolf. His father is the family leader, and this legacy is to be passed down to Liam, if Liam wants it. And Liam has taken himself to the forests of Oregan to be alone, to determine what he wants to choose... and he feels the whispers of love, destiny, waiting for him.. but he is determined to choose, to not let fate decide for him.

Plot: Can she open herself to a world she only imagined existed in her childhood? Can she open herself to magic? to Liam? to her own power? She actually does, with an innocent, joyous embrace. Liam as wolf spends time with her, especially at night - and she prattles to him about whatever is on her mind - taking baths with him in her room, reading to him while he lies on her bed and she reads to him until she sleeps. And Liam comes to her and shares dreams, dreams of making love. But Liam holds himself in reserve, controlling the pace by which he exposes her to the truth. She accepts his magic, she loves his family, she accepts her magic... but she tells him she loves him, and he tells her of his legacy... and she realizes that he has held back - he is not offering a partnership, he wants the power/control... and she leaves, when he cannot tell her he loves her. and after a few weeks, she has resignedher job, given up her apartment, stored what she wants to keep, tried to explain things to her parents, and has a ticket to Ireland, to explore her powers and family... and Liam's mother comes to her, and encourages her to go to her ailing son... and she does, and he finally tells her he loves her... ahhhhh

This is the third and the fourth stories to the Donovan Legacy series, I was putting it off for awhile because the story-lines and the characters did not seem to grab me, as it did in the first two.

Charmed 4.-4.5 Stars
This story is about a woman named Anastasia Donovan, she is a cousin to Morgana and Sebastian who were the main characters in The Donovan Legacy: Captivated and Entranced therefore she is a hereditary witch, a woman who can feel other's emotions and a healer.

I was not at all exc

This is the third and the fourth stories to the Donovan Legacy series, I was putting it off for awhile because the story-lines and the characters did not seem to grab me, as it did in the first two.

I was not at all excited for this story because Anastasia did not really appeal to me, and her story was falling in love with her next door neighbor, who was a single-father... pretty boring right? Well it turns out this story was full of humor! Boone (which is the single father) was hilarious, he would not back down without a fight, and he was very appealing. His daughter Jessie, was vibrant, curious, sweet, and funny I really did like her.

Anastasia fell in love with the child first and then Boone second, and I wish Nora took more time to develop the love between the woman and the child. It seemed to happen on impact but I guess that usually happens, I can never explain the amount of times I get smitten with the children that come into my work. All in all I liked their story far more then I had anticipated.

Enchanted 2 Stars
This is the one that I had rooted for and got so excited to read, Nora usually saves the best for last however this one fell short.

Liam is a hereditary witch as well, part of the Donovan Legacy, and since I had never heard of him before, -and mind you all the cousins and family members are extremely close- I stewed up my own story while reading the synopsis.

I had thought Liam was related to the family because one of the relatives had had a child with another woman, and she had never told him, passing on the Donovan Legacy, and he was now searching them out in order for them to explain what was happening to him. On this discovery he falls in love, and must explain to her who and what he is, while coming to terms with it himself. She did this similar concept in her Irish Born series minus all the witchcraft. You can imagine how much I liked my idea because it sounds pretty f-ing good if you ask me, and since I had let the idea play around and form in my head, I was pretty excited about it... but did I get that? No.

Instead I got Liam who is a shape- shifting wolf witch and a woman who was born a witch but just never knew it, fate has placed them together, and in order to fulfill destiny they will need each other.... I like my idea better. This story was a hot mess, I did not like it at all, and I still have no idea how Liam is connected to the Donovan Legacy. What a disappointment.

and while we're on that subject WTH was that about?! she was like ah look at those powerful legs,sleek body teeming with power.
idk about u guys,but ive never had these kinds of thoughts about a freakin animal!
&she got undressed and took a bath in front of the wolf.yeah,the wolf was the guy but it's still completely GROSS!
maybe nora roberts has some sick twisted fetish about wolves in real life,but 2 go public about it and share to the world your perverse fantasies..that took courage.
i've read this book two times and i don't know if it gets better or worse the more times you read it. ...more

As a whole- a fun quick series to read. I liked the paranormal twist to this series. Book 4 was just ok.

The first book, Charmed, was an easy read. Nothing great, just sort of a fluffy read. I didn't really fall in love with any of the characters, or care for the story all that much. Enchanted hard...I had to force myself to finish it for the sake of saying I finished the book. It was boring and I found both main characters lacking. Liam was just kind of a jerk and I hated how he kept referencing stuff he knew was going to happen in the future. He just really was not likable at all!

I think this is only the second (maybe 3rd, I can't remember) book by Nora Roberts that I've read and I have to wonder why she is as popular as she is...I haven't liked anything I've read thus far. She seems to deal in cliche's and attempts at beautiful poetry and just falls flat overall.

I tend to like Nora Robert's stuff. They're usually fun and amusing.

These two stories make me cringe over and over and over. The whole witch/supernatural thing has it's nice angle, but the way it's carried out is really standard-hokey-bad. The spell language and stuff is just painful to read.

Maybe it's because I'm familiar with forms of witchcraft, magick, etc beliefs and practices in real life people... But yeah, as said this was repeatedly cringe-worthy.

I'm not finishing either of the stories.

I loved both of these paranormal romances. The characters are terrific. So well written. I like the fact that the story takes place among regular people, that half of each couple is mere mortal. I really enjoyed that the second story included many of the characters from the first story. (I can see why the two stories would be published together.)

Charmed is the first Nora Roberts book I have read and I am in the middle of Enchanted. She's seems to have a formula she uses for the stories. It's tolerable for two but if they all go on like this I can't take it. This is a good/ok book if you are in the mood for fluff. I loved the Anastasia and Boone story. Rowan and Liam were a bit rocky for me, tbh.

These two stories were the first time I'd read anything from Nora Roberts Donovan Family series, but both stories were fantastic. Like always, Nora Roberts does a great job of making the characters come alive and have distinct personalities. She uses a variety of male and female characters, but I always like them and enjoy following their life and seeing how everything works out. Roberts also has an incredible skill when it comes to interweaving magic into her stories. Because the themes of magic and family were strong in the first, it was a nice fluffy read for me, and I could overlook the things I don't like in Roberts' writing. Unfortunately, the second story involved just two people for the most part and I didn't care for them, so I couldn't get past what I don't like and I DNFed. Constant headhopping is the dealbreaker for me for an NR book, to say nothing of the lack of contraception or thought about it. (It weirds me out that I enjoy J.D. I don't know about this one. It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worse either. It was nice easy reading and I got into both stories quite quickly. Although the characters relationships seemed to happen very fast I guess r the hats gonna happen with shorter stories and it kept the storyline going at a good pace. I seemed to get into charmed more than enchanted, not sure whether it's because I found the wolf thing a bit weird at first (if you read it you'll know what I mean)

It was awkward and since he'd never been mentioned in the other books came across as an afterthought to me. Though I did appreciate getting the chance to catch up with Ana, Morgana and Sebastian.

Enchanted is the worst Nora Roberts book I've ever read. Besides the lack of plot and characterization, it has major consent issues. What's interesting though is the similarities it has to Roberts' newest book Awakening: purposeless teacher with self-esteem issues discovers her magical heritage.

Two stars because Charmed wasn't quite so bad, though still not Roberts at her peak.
